Take Care

How to care for your L. Shoff jewelry.

Below is information on how to treat and clean your L. SHOFF jewelry.

Store your L. SHOFF jewelry in the box that it came in for best results and safekeeping. Jewelry can also be stored in a lined jewelry box or plastic bag for metals that may oxidize such as sterling silver.

Gold

Gold can pit, or create small holes when it comes in contact with harsh cleaners and solvents. The same reaction can occur in chlorinated swimming pools. Because of this, it is a good idea to take off your jewelry or use gloves while cleaning.

To clean your gold jewelry, use mild dish soap (without detergent), a toothbrush, and mild soapy water.

Silver

Because silver naturally oxidizes, it is best to store in your L. SHOFF packaging or in your jewelry box.

Clean silver at home with mild dish soap (without detergent), a toothbrush, and mild soapy water.

Stones

Stones such as fossilized woolly mammoth ivory and fossilized dinosaur bone are untreated. To clean your jewelry featuring these stones, avoid cleaning the stones and clean the metal according to the above instructions.

Diamonds

Diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring material on Earth. That being said, diamonds can occasionally break when hit just right (on what is called the diamond’s cleavage plane). Sudden and extreme temperature changes can also cause problems within a diamond’s stability. These changes can cause thermal shock and create new fractures and cleavages or cause existing ones to spread. Diamonds can be cleaned safely with lint-free cloths, commercial jewelry cleaning solutions, and household detergents. Avoid using ultrasonic and steam cleaners as they can loosen the setting.

Colored Stones

Most colored gems can be cleaned with warm soapy water (no detergents) and a soft brush.

All colored stones are unique and react differently to chemicals, heat, and every day wear. To err on the safe side, clean only with warm soapy water. If unsure, always contact us.

General Information

Exposure to chemicals can damage or discolor precious metals – gold, silver and platinum – and may harm some colored gems. Fine jewelry should be removed before diving into a chlorinated swimming pool or before using household cleaners. Many of these cleaners contain ammonia, which can be too harsh for delicate gems or jewelry. Chlorine bleach, another common household solvent, can pit or damage gold alloys.

Most colored gems can be cleaned with warm water, mild dish soap (no detergents) and a soft brush.

Store your jewelry in the L. SHOFF packaging that it came in or in your favorite jewelry box.
